Forgetting What is Behind and Pressing On

I haven’t been on this page for a while. I actually took a two week vacation and it was great, but it’s good to be back with all of you who follow this blog.

We spend a lot of time making memories. Our phones, facebook, and our instagram accounts are filled with pictures. We spend a lot of time posting them to various places so that we can share those memories.

We like to have things that remind us of the past. And celebrating those good memories can be a great source of joy. But we can, and often do. get caught up in the wrong part of the past by remembering the wrong things.

We can allow ourselves to live in negative feedback loops that don’t enhance today and even threaten our future.

I think the Apostle Paul gave us a better way when he wrote to the church in Philippi;

13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13,14

Sure it’s good to remember the past, especially the good things. And yes it is helpful for us to learn lessons from the not so good things in the past. But then it is time to move on.

As followers of Jesus Christ we are always pressing on toward the goal of being more like Jesus. Pressing on to be in greater service. Pressing on to be His hands and feet.

When we get caught up too much in the past, especially the wrong things, we don’t press on. When we don’t move forward we stagnate, or worse go backwards.

Sometimes we just need to forget what is past and press on.
